Sentiment Analysis
Pharma stocks put up a great summer. The iShares US Pharmaceuticals ETF ( IHE ) outperformed from the start of June through much of August. Lately, though, price action has turned sketchy. That's right on time as far as seasonality is concerned, with September and October historically being weaker months for the ETF. I issue a hold rating on the iShares US Pharmaceuticals ETF due to fair valuation and mounting near-term headwinds. IHE's portfolio is highly concentrated, with 43% in JNJ and LLY and top 10 holdings totaling 76%. Technical trends have turned concerning, with a recent breach of trendline support and a possible 10% correction to $97 likely through October. Seasonality is unfavorable for IHE in September and October, while long-term growth drivers like AI remain, but near-term risks dominate.
