Wall Street closed the trading week mixed, as Broadcom ( AVGO ) posted its latest earnings in a week where yields and rates remained in focus after the latest nonfarm payrolls report landed.
Broadcom ( AVGO ) shares fell after the software and semiconductor giant issued weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter guidance that overshadowed a strong third-quarter report.
Treasury yields and interest rates stayed in focus after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said there is still a case for patience before deciding whether to raise rates.
U.S. employers added +162K jobs in the latest nonfarm payrolls report, well above the +55K gain economists had expected. The prior month was also revised higher, to a +21K increase from an originally reported decline of -23K, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
For the week, the blue-chip Dow ( DJI ) fell -0.27% , the benchmark S&P ( SP500 ) added +0.09% , and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ( COMP:IND ) pushed up +0.40% .
The data center boom is becoming a major issue in the upcoming midterm elections, with local communities pushing back on construction plans amid concerns over electricity rates and environmental impact. A recent Gallup survey found that seven in 10 Americans oppose constructing data centers for AI in their local area – and candidates running for office are latching on to the issue.
