Sentiment Analysis
The Iranian situation is the key driver of current shortages. ExxonMobil and Chevron expect elevated oil prices to persist. But industry consensus sees the spike as temporary. Significant uncertainty causes energy companies to delay major capital commitments. Divergent executive opinions and a lack of clear signals are resulting in a cautious, defensive industry posture. Oil supply from strategic petroleum reserves is not materially impacting the market.
To me, the question of the strategic petroleum reserve running out is by itself (in a vacuum) no big deal. The effect on the supply of the release of emergency oil holdings around the world is just not a big change.
