AstraZeneca dragged the FTSE 100 lower on Thursday, while Computacenter soared and US AI stocks gained.
The blue-chip index was down 0.2% at 8,113.26.
Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca fell 2.7% after it announced it had agreed to buy US biotech firm Amgen for $41.5bn.
Computacenter jumped 11% after the IT infrastructure company raised its profit forecast for the second time this year.
US AI stocks gained ground, with Nvidia up 3.5% and Microsoft up 2.1%.
The FTSE 250 was up 0.3% at 20,889.70.
