CoinShares Content Hub A hawkish Fed delays the liquidity trade CoinShares September 22, 2026 Two headwinds now limit the prospect of a meaningful breakout in bitcoin: the setback to the CLARITY Act and a more hawkish Federal Reserve. Neither changes the longer-term thesis, but both push the timing of a sustained recovery further out. A hawkish Fed delays the liquidity trade Inflation remains too high, progress back towards 2% has not been sufficient, and policymakers continue to characterise the economy and labour market as relatively strong. The more important surprise was not the expected rate hike itself but the removal of expected easing through 2027 in the dot plot. That supports the dollar and short-dated yields and delays the liquidity conditions bitcoin has responded to. With Iran still contributing materially to inflation through higher energy prices, a further rate hike this year looks increasingly plausible. For portfolios this is a difficult setup into year-end. A decisive break above US$80,000 is unlikely without either a meaningful improvement in the inflation outlook or a significant change in monetary policy expectations. Without a resolution to the Iran conflict, oil prices remain an inflationary pressure and the Fed has little incentive to soften. CLARITY slips, and the pain is uneven The ethics component remains the sticking point, with concerns on both sides over provisions on politicians profiting from crypto-linked ventures. We do not share the view that failure this year pushes the legislation out to 2030. It retains bipartisan relevance because it matters for stablecoins, whose issuers are becoming increasingly significant marginal buyers of US government debt while Treasury yields remain elevated. A revised version may return early next year. The impact is uneven across the asset class. Bitcoin is relatively insulated because its regulatory status is already clearer. Ethereum and other altcoins are more exposed, particularly because much of the stablecoin payment infrastructure sits on Ethereum and similar networks. The inability to distribute yield also reduces the commercial appeal for banks, one reason the issue has faced such strong resistance from incumbent finance. The bond market is the upside route Treasury yields are already historically high, and the Treasury’s limited purchases have done little to pull down the long end. Higher political uncertainty and higher yields build pressure for a far more aggressive response, an uncomfortable trade-off: higher rates worsen the debt burden, while intervention adds inflationary pressure. In an extreme scenario, a forceful liquidity response becomes a powerful catalyst for both gold and bitcoin. We treat that as a tail risk rather than the base case, but it is one of the clearer routes to a significant upside breakout. The near-term picture stays subdued, with the heaviest pressure on altcoins. The longer-term backdrop remains constructive; the timing has moved out.
