Ondine wins five Ontario hospitals for Steriwave infection treatment

Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI, OTC:OBIMF) , the life sciences company, has secured the deployment of its Steriwave treatment across five hospitals in Southern Ontario. The hospitals, which serve a population of more than 3 million, will use the therapy to prevent infections in patients undergoing major orthopaedic and spine surgery.

Steriwave will be deployed across about 4,300 hip and knee replacement patients and 700 spine surgery patients each year, roughly 5,000 procedures in total. The product uses a light-activated, non-antibiotic formulation to reduce harmful bacteria in the nose shortly before surgery, tackling a primary source of surgical site infections.

The company argued that such infections are a costly and preventable burden, citing a Canadian study that put the cost of complex infections after hip and knee surgery at around C$99,000 per patient in today's money. The wins follow positive headline results from Ondine's 5,188-patient LANTERN trial in the US and Canada, which met its primary goal.

Carolyn Cross, chief executive, said hospitals increasingly needed practical, non-antibiotic tools that could be delivered reliably at the point of care. The deployments add to Steriwave's growing use in Canadian hospitals. Ondine is pursuing a strategy of targeted adoption in high-value surgical pathways, followed by expansion across more sites and patient groups.
