Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, Bets Big on Agentic AI

Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6, featuring Oryon CPUs exceeding 5 GHz, redesigned AI hardware, larger context windows and improved power efficiency for agentic AI workloads. Qualcomm is positioning smartphones as personal AI hubs that can understand context and complete tasks on users’ behalf, with Google, Mastercard and others emphasizing the need for privacy, security and user control. Xiaomi and Motorola plan to launch 2026 smartphones powered by the new platforms, while Qualcomm’s acquisition of Modular will support open-source tools for developing AI across different hardware environments.

Qualcomm NASDAQ: QCOM used its Snapdragon Summit 2026 keynote to outline its strategy for “agentic” artificial intelligence, positioning smartphones and other connected devices as personal AI endpoints that can understand context, coordinate tasks and act on users’ behalf. President and CEO Cristiano Amon said the industry is shifting from a phone-centric model built around apps toward an agent-centric model built around user intent. He said smartphones will remain central because they are personal, always present and contain important context about their users.

“The phone is not going to go anywhere,” Amon said. “But we now can see clearly how your phone is going to interact with those new agentic experiences.” Amon said useful agentic experiences will need to be trusted, secure, private and user-controlled, while also reducing friction compared with completing tasks manually through apps. He described a future in which an AI agent could coordinate schedules, buy event tickets, compare products and complete purchases after receiving user permission.

Google SVP of Platforms and Devices Rick Osterloh joined Amon on stage to discuss the companies’ work on AI-enabled experiences across phones, PCs, vehicles and other devices. Osterloh said Google is adding an “intelligence layer” to its platforms through Gemini Intelligence, with the goal of moving from answering questions to helping users complete tasks. Osterloh said Gemini had reached 1 billion monthly users and that token usage had increased sevenfold year over year. He also said Google Cloud grew 80% in the prior quarter, according to his remarks.

Qualcomm also showcased an agentic shopping demonstration in which an AI assistant recommended a Snapdragon-powered PC, identified a rewards-card offer and initiated a purchase after confirmation. Mastercard Senior Fellow Raja Rajamannar said trust becomes especially important when users delegate purchasing authority to an AI agent. Rajamannar said consumers need confidence that their payment credentials, identity and personal data will be protected, particularly as AI contributes to new forms of fraud and deepfakes. He said personalization must be balanced with privacy protections.

Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s senior vice president and general manager of mobile handset, announced two new flagship mobile platforms: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Patrick said the Gen 6 is designed to provide premium performance, AI capabilities and power efficiency, while the Extreme version is intended as the company’s highest-performance platform for agentic AI workloads.
