Barratt Redrow PLC ( LSE:BTRW ) View Price & Profile Barratt Redrow and Persimmon surge as new buyer scheme revives housebuilder hopes Published: 04:12 28 Sep 2026 EDT UK housebuilders surged on Monday after the government confirmed plans for a new equity-loan programme intended to bring first-time buyers into the new-build market and stimulate residential construction. Barratt Redrow PLC (LSE:BTRW) jumped around 14% to 353p, while Persimmon PLC (LSE:PSN) climbed more than 15% to 1,332p. Taylor Wimpey PLC (LSE:TW.) and Vistry Group PLC (LSE:VTY) advanced about 14.5%, with Berkeley Group Holdings PLC (LSE:BKG) gaining almost 5%. The sector-wide rally helped the FTSE 100 rise 0.2% to 10,717, despite heavy losses among mining companies. The more domestically focused FTSE 250 gained 0.4% to 24,366. The government said its “Your First Home” scheme would be confirmed in next month’s Budget and target prospective buyers unable to overcome the deposit barrier without assistance. Pre-registration is expected to open before the end of 2026. The scheme is expected to allow qualifying buyers to purchase a new-build property with a deposit of 2.5%, supported by a government-backed equity loan covering 20% of the home’s value. Full eligibility rules, regional price limits and funding details are still to be announced. Investors are betting that the programme could increase reservation rates, accelerate sales and give developers greater confidence to expand construction. The previous Help to Buy programme assisted more than a third of a million new-build purchases between 2013 and 2022. The Home Builders Federation welcomed the announcement, saying the industry was prepared to increase housing delivery, employment and investment. Optimism also spread through the wider housing supply chain. Howden Joinery gained 4.3%, while B&Q and Screwfix owner Kingfisher rose 4%. However, the earlier Help to Buy scheme attracted criticism for supporting house prices and improving developer margins alongside home ownership. The Budget will therefore be closely examined for safeguards ensuring the new programme improves affordability and generates additional construction rather than simply raising demand for a limited supply of homes.
