Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sides with Nvidia's Huang on AI safety and slowdown debate

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his view of artificial intelligence safety on Tuesday, taking a stance that's more akin to the perspective of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rather than Anthropic chief Dario Amodei.

Because AI labs risk "significant liability if their models cause harm," Zuckerberg believes that companies are incentivized to prevent potential problems, taking a more market-driven perspective of the topic that's in line with Huang's public comments on the same day.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his view of artificial intelligence safety on Tuesday, taking a stance that's more akin to the perspective of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rather than Anthropic chief Dario Amodei.

Zuckerberg said in a post on X and other social media platforms that he believes AI labs that fail to "focus on alignment will fall behind," referring to the kind of work that developers conduct to ensure the technologies adhere to human values.

This topic of AI safety has been blown into the spotlight over the past few days after Amodei published an essay over the weekend in which he called for the tech industry to "slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," an option that Altman later endorsed and which President Donald Trump later criticized.

Because AI labs risk "significant liability if their models cause harm," Zuckerberg believes that companies are incentivized to prevent potential problems, taking a more market-driven perspective of the topic that's in line with Huang's public comments on the same day.

Zuckerberg said that Meta "delayed shipping" its Muse AI technologies because of "safety and security" reasons on its own volition.

"We just did it as part of our day-to-day work because it was clearly the right thing for people and for us," Zuckerberg said.

Speaking at the annual Salesforce Dreamforce conference, Huang told Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff that AI model makers should take responsibility for their products instead of seeking government regulations from lawmakers intended to limit potential harms and risks, as Amodei previously said.

Huang reiterated his perspective in an interview on CNBC's " Mad Money ," characterizing such AI- related laws and regulations as "just completely unnecessary."

"We have plenty of laws. We have plenty of regulations that govern the reliability and the functionality of products," Huang said.

Amodei also spoke at Dreamforce and reinforced his core belief that slowing down the pace of model development represents "the way to lead the industry forward, to set an example, to say that everyone can always be better."

Later in the day at Dreamforce, Altman joined Benioff for a fireside chat and discussed his belief that safety and monitoring should take precedent over features when it comes to AI development, and acknowledged the general sense of fear that companies may not do so because of competitive pressure.
