Dow futures slip as trade talks break down between US and Canada Published: 08:05 24 Aug 2026 EDT 8:00am: Trade rift deepens Wall Street looks set for a softer start to the week, with futures pointing lower after US-Canada trade talks broke down over the weekend. Dow futures were down 0.1%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.2% and Nasdaq futures fell 0.6%, putting technology stocks under the most pressure in early trading. The sour mood follows a fresh escalation in trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. The US imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods after negotiations broke down, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend talks and vow retaliation with like-for-like tariffs. Investors will also get a read on the Chicago Fed National Activity Index later today, with the previous reading coming in at -0.02. On the earnings front, Trip.com Group (NASDAQ) is due to report. The bigger focus, however, will be on the week ahead. The Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole gathering could provide fresh clues on the outlook for interest rates and bond markets, although Swissquote senior analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya cautioned that there are no easy fixes for rising US yields. “Maybe this week’s Jackson Hole gathering will bring some clarity on how the Fed will fit into this, but in any case, US yields won’t magically fall while US debt keeps growing and Middle East tensions keep energy prices elevated,” she said. Attention will also be on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is expected to unveil a fiscal consolidation plan as early as this week in what could be an attempt to get ahead of increasingly nervous bond markets. “Whether investors will play along remains to be seen,” Ozkardeskaya added. And then there is Nvidia. The chip giant is easily the biggest name on this week’s earnings calendar, with investors closely watching whether the AI heavyweight can continue to justify the enormous expectations surrounding the sector. Options traders are pricing in a move of roughly 4% in either direction following the results. But Nvidia is not the only technology name in the spotlight. Salesforce, CrowdStrike, Intuit and Workday are also set to report, making this a busy week for a sector that remains central to the broader market's momentum. With trade tensions, bond yields, Jackson Hole and a heavyweight earnings slate all competing for attention, investors may be in for another eventful week on Wall Street. Continue reading
